Morocco Day 5: Casablanca, Mosque and a historical tour!

Back again!

So on the 5th Day, we travelled to Casablanca through train. Though the train ride didn't take as long, it took a good hour at least I think. Walking into Casablanca was totally different from the other cities. It was more the city for mainly tourism and is evident in the overwhelming numbers of people everywhere!

The first place we went to is the Hassan II Mosque which is the work of the previous King. It was, I think, one of the few if not the only one which allows tourists to enter inside the Mosque. And oh my goodness, it was simply amazing! I went to the English tour while the rest went to the German tour. The photos didn't say enough but the beauty of the Mosque and how much work was built into it was just simply spectacular. I don't think I would've learnt so much about the culture, or be even motivated to look, but being there taught me so much! The roof of the Mosque was also opened that day which only opens 40 days during a whole year! So we were so lucky! Normally it's only opened for festivals or really really nice days. The door in which only the King and special officials come through was also opened to see if it worked! So we were extremely lucky! The work and architecture was simply thrilling! I could type some of the things that were in the tour but then again, you could have always find it in Wikipeadia, like always. But it just doesn't catch the essence of the Mosque. All I can really say to that is that, if you are ever in Morocco, go to the tour. The experience was just something that no one could buy!

Anyways, after that we ate this small cafe which was quite delicious and completely filled with tourists! Haha! But eating outside amidst blue and yellow walls was a nice feeling!

We met up later with the rest of our group and our tour guide for around Casablanca! She showed us the streets and history that made Casablanca the city it is today! It was interesting to find out that many of the buildings which were built there, were either inspired by Europe and yet in return inspired some of the most famous buildings in Europe today! It has a both a mix of influence from Western Europe and Latin America!

That day, we went home and just had a simple dinner in places near the hotel. Most of the guys went to the nearest place to eat in which had a live tv of the football match! I think it was FC Barcelona vs. Madrid. Haha it was quite funny! Yet not so funny, when I was woken in the middle of the night due to the cheers of fans of Madrid. (Was it Madrid that won?) Haha!

Anyways, two posts in one day!

However, I must go to sleep now!

Ciao!

Morocco Day 4: Relaxing, Massages and Sailing

Here I am again! Overdue yet again!

Day 4 was totally a relaxing day, which included me waking up at 10am. It was a quiet breakfast. Unfortunately, Sabine got quite sick that day! :(

But in the afternoon, while I was writing in my diary and Maurice was playing with his diablo on the balcony, Sabine went to get a massage. After her, I got one too! It was great feeling, since I haven't had a massage in just about ages! It was quite funny since the woman who was doing the massage for me, didn't speak English or German so I couldn't communicate with her! ( I had the suspicions that she didn't speak Cantonese either! Haha!)

Afterwards, Wolfgang, Dietmar, Maurice and I walked to the beach to go sailing!  Actually Maurice initially wanted to swimming with me in the beach, however, it was quite dirty and I didn't really want to. In addition, there's basically no girls swimming because of the religion and I didn't want to be the only one. Being an Asian already attracted too many unwanted stares! Haha! So we decided to just stick with sailing. Since in sailing you normally get wet, I was determined to go at least in jean shorts. For about 10 minutes debate, how to get me across the city without making so much a commotion with the natives, we had to make a specific route to the beach. Luckily Rabat is more modern and open to new views because of tourism. However, that doesn't deny the fact that the whole way there, everyone kept staring at my legs... I felt so embarrassed and silly because I knew they were looking because they weren't use to seeing any exposed skin to that extent!

So once we finally arrived there (mind you we had to walk through the graveyard next to the beach which was quite scary despite the fact we were in broad daylight!) , we arranged for one of the sailing boats to be set and ready to go! It wasn't the best or the newest but it made it a great experience simply because it's in Morocco! It was sure a rocky ride! We weren't allowed to go too far because it was rather windy! So we just went back and forth in the cove. Going with the wind was nice, but going against, at the end Maurice made me change positions with him because he was getting totally soaked! Haha! It was so fun and I cannot wait to sail once again in Austria!

That night, we ate dinner at the hotel in which a jazz band was playing. The music was fantastic and the hotel was completely full! I was exhausted that day and went to bed quite early!

I might post another one real soon since I'm leaving for Euro tour in around a week's time. I'm not sure if you guys want me to talk about Euro tour once it's over because as you know, it's going to take me forever to blog it! So if you want... tell me one way or another and I'll think about it! :D

Morocco Day 3: Fes, Fabrics and Leather

Okay, sorry guys about the late updates and everything, just wasn't sure who was still reading them! Haha! And in addition, sorry but none of my photos are in order... I'm not sure why... since I uploaded them all at the same time but hopefully you can find out which ones I'm referring to... though the photos on the same page are usually from the same day.

So on Day 3 we left quite early to catch a train to Fes. So Fes is the oldest kingdom city in Morocco with the main colour of yellow! It took around 4 hours to get there so there I caught up with my sleep! When we finally got there, we walked to the markets, yet again, only to stop in a nice cafe/restaurant. There was a small lake nearby and it cooled us down a lot. We finally tried the traditional Moroccan food of Tajins! And i loved the dessert! I know it sounds strange, but the oranges with sugar and cinnamon on it tastes absolutely DELICIOUS!

We walked by the King's garden which showed another side to Morocco which was obviously closed off. But the difference between the gate, from one side to another, was huge!

Once we entered into the markets, it was just chaotic! You think Rabat is busy, but because Fes is the most traditional city, the streets are literally tiny. And every now and then there would be a line of donkeys which carried heaps of products walking up and down. You would be amazed at the strengths of donkeys here!

Fes is also the city which produces all the leather so that day, both Sabine and I's sense of smell and sight just went NUTS! The strong smell of leather and spices, plus the dust that rose and appeared out of nowhere just attacked us! My eyes kept watering and my nose kept running the whole day! So the both of us had to keep taking allergy pills.. so technically we were on drugs. Haha!

We split into two groups, so it was Wolf, the Lenz Familie and I, and we searched for place to see the leather works. And omg, when we found it... it was just simply amazing, you have no idea. All the pictures of the leather places was right there in front of me! First there's the waterway in which they wash skins. So you can guess that it's not exactly clean! Then they soak the skins in the white bath things for a couple of days which contains a substance which allows the fur to fall of easily. Then another 5 days in the muddy/brown tubs to wash and clean! And then FINALLY the last tubs to dye into the individual colours for about a week. To dry the skins/leather they must dry them out and it depends on the weather. After that, they ship them to individual artisans to decorate the leather. Apparently, all the workers in the leather industry worked individual however a couple of hundred years ago, they decided to work together and so the leather industry formed. :D I warn you though, it really stank...

Through walking in the markets, we could also visit the library but only from outside. Though it was quite large and the decorations were beautiful! We didn't have much time to get back and missing out on a long walk back (plus it was boiling) we took a 'taxi' back which cost 40 Dehrims (cannot spell their currency) which is equivalent to about 4 dollars. And this was for a 10 minute ride back!

We had a snack back at the place in the train station which had AIR CONDITIONING and felt great, before we went on our long trip back home.

We met back with Barbara, which she took us to a really nice restaurant. Everyone there tried different Tajins, both sweet and savoury. I have to admit though, the most interesting part of that evening was when Barbara ordered a Tajin which had sheep's brain in it. Everyone tried it at first until it was left that only Maurice and I hadn't tried it yet. Both of us were shocked but he bravely took a piece and started to call me a wuss. (Isn't he nice?) To be honest, it was more of a mental thing that made me hesitate to try it out! Since the last time I saw a sheep's brain was mashed up between the fingers of Quinlan and Jacky in a Biology experiment! However, eventually I had the guts to try it... which was interesting. It felt like the yoke of an egg but boiled. So it was soft and squishy. Lol, what you properly expect from a brain!

And then we all went to bed for a nice long sleep since the next day was a relaxing day! :D

Anyways, got to go,

Morocco Day 2: Flowers, the Markets and Rabat

So the second day of Morocco! In the morning, Maurice and I wandered together around the hotel just after breakfast! It was extremely quiet and so different from the loud scenes that we saw the previous night.

Every morning, there is a flower market which sells all these fresh flowers in cool arrangements! However, they are sold at very cheap prices and not all bought. But they are open everyday! We also followed some asian tourists for a while, just for the fun for it! Haha! However, the confronting thing was the poverty that was evident everywhere we went. I took a photo of the hospital after taking a photo of the flower market. The condition it was in said enough and Maurice and I stood there for a while just looking at it...

When we came back to the hotel, we found that a random guy had given all the girls bouquets of roses! Okay, with the photos and what I type hopefully that you can correlate what I write... I put up the link in the previous post...

Anyways, so we walked towards the markets! One thing in the markets that stood out where the million of stands that sold orange juice, meaning freshly squeezed orange juice! It's everywhere! Plus there are so many stray cats everywhere! I thought there were a lot of cats in Austria already but there are about 100% more cats in Morocco and all stray!

The markets were awesome, though we didn't stop long enough to shop and we were promised that we would go another day. Also all the streets were pretty awesome because there were all white and the bottom would be painted blue. The reason is because Rabat is one of the four kingdoms in Morocco in which the King lives in. Each kingdom has a colour and the Rabat's blue. And Maurice totally blended in with the walls because of his clothes! Haha! Made me totally laugh!

We stopped by the cafe that looked out to the sea which was beautiful! We had delicious Moroccan biscuits and had Moroccan tea! The tea was so nice and I know it sounds weird but it was so tasty. It was mint leaves, green tea, hot water and a hell of a lot of sugar! I know it sounds retarded, but it was one of the best teas I've ever had! Unfortunately they said that you cannot make it usually because the mint leaves were different there :( Anyways we walked on the beach and admired the view. This was the time in which I really missed Australia and it's beautiful beaches! Though the ocean smelled wonderful, the litter that scattered across the sand on the beach ruined it. There's basically a lot of rubbish everywhere. Plus how the graveyard was situated right next to the beach.... lol

For lunch we went to a nice restaurant next to the beach, which was absolutely AMAZING. The seafood here is just so tasty! The huge dishes here definitely filled us up and more probably! Lol. Afterwards we just headed back to the hotel and just chilled for the rest of the night!

Anyways... more about 3rd day later!

With love, from Austria

P.S. After the second photo of Maurice standing on a rock you have to skip a couple of photos until you reach the photo with the ocean and funny blocks!

Morocco Day 1: Flights, Travelling and Arriving

Hello! I'm back from Morocco and much has happened! To catch up with all the events that happened in the oh-so-exotic land of Morocco, I'll be doing in days.

The link for all my photos in Morocco is : http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/Morocco%20Trip%20-%20April%202011/

Okay so for Day 1 (the first 13 photos);
We got ready the night before and hurried our way out with much grief! Haha, we kept leaving things behind (for me, it was the camera's memory card!) and going back for it! Haha, but we eventually left with most of our things... haha! Maurice was super excited because it was only his second time in flying in a plane because in Europe, to travel all you need is to take a train!

We travelled with another of their friend called Wolfgang! He's from Vienna! All the people we were meeting in Morocco were all once friends in Vienna, though they now live in all parts of the world! It was an international meeting as there were not only the Austrians but the German, French and Spanish (and Australian!!)! Haha! It was pretty awesome. Anyways going back to travelling on the first day... we took a train to Zurich and caught a flight there which was only 3 hours and 15 minutes. The time difference wasn't large, only an hour and was pretty good. The plane was relatively small and did not have the individual televisions as it was a short flight! Maurice kept looking out the window and pointing the sky to me... Haha!

Momo, the husband of Barbara who is Austrian who now lives in Morocco, met us at 11.00pm at Casablanca to drive us to the capital of Morocco, Rabat where we were staying at! The hotel we were staying at is where Momo and Barbara worked at as the hotel managers. It was really nice though I wasn't really conscious when we arrived. Both Maurice and I fell asleep in the car! Haha! I shared a room with Marion, whose French though living in Bonn! Anyways, that was the first day in Morocco!

I'll update more later as it is already quite late! :D

Sabrina, Brunch and the coming days!

Well last Tuesday, I went to horse riding again, but with Sabrina, who is Dietmar's colleague and owns two horses! She led me around this time but said that next time I go, we can go riding together. We talked a lot and I found that she's going to go in a jumping competition with one of her horses! I got to feed them and groom them a bit! It's amazing there! http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/Riding%20with%20Sabrina%205th%20of%20April/

I didn't do anything that special that week. But on Sunday, we had brunch with Dietmar's younger sister and her fiancee! We had it at this nice place called freihof! It's in an old house which is more than 300 years old and is famous for it windows. It's because all of its windows is double glassed (I'm not sure if that's the right wording) but basically, there's two layers and the inner layer is curved outwards! It's really cool and apparently cannot be replaced or made today! Also it's famous because they only serve bio food. And I have to say it was delicious! All the bread was so nice and the spreads were so tasty and basically I stuffed myself pretty hard!

To work off the food baby I had collected, all of us went walking up the mountain. It wasn't such a good idea with me wearing flats, but the view was absolutely amazing. I felt like as if I was part of the beginning scene in Sound of Music on the hills! (Only with more houses on the hills) Haha! It was just thrilling though I hated the sweating bit. Haha!

So in 2 days time, I'm going to Morocco!!!!! Going to Africa is somewhere I wouldn't have thought to have gone in a long time! So I'm so pumped for it! I'm not 100% if I will bring my laptop, but even though if I do I probably won't be able to type much since I might be busy! But anyways!

Schiwoche, accidents and Schladming [Continued]

Since I've busted my limited on uploading photos, I'll try just typing stuff up instead. But to continue from ski camp, I've kinda lost the energy to write about it. Haha! Basically it was hectic fun, I injured my left knee which still hasn't completely healed yet, I increased the number of bruises on my body and made so many new friends! The photos from ski camp continue at this website:
http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/ (By the way, by how the way photobucket works, all my photos are viewed backwards)

I think from now on, I'll upload my photos individually onto my photobucket website and then type entires here!

I've been relatively good! I had lots of fun two weeks ago, when it was one of my classmates' birthdays. So during our two hour break, we went to the Lake and brought with us strawberries and whipped cream! Something so simple was great fun! Then we just proceeded to play around with the whipped cream!
http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/Sophie%20Birthday%20by%20Bodensee%2031st%20of%20March/#!cpZZ2QQtppZZ16

In the middle of those 2 weeks ago, I was at home, just on the computer a HUGE PARCEL CAME! Sorry to break the news, but it wasn't for me :( Haha. It was actually the 5m trampoline that Dietmar ordered in for Maurice so he could do his complicated tricks with backflips and what not. But it was massive. We had to construct it and all of us (some neighbours and his friends helped) got pretty dirty. I think it was because of the slime (not the right word) on the metal bars. It was new and had this greasy silver stuff on it and pretty much got everywhere! I also met Pia that day! She is Marie-Sophie's sailing buddy and was really nice! She invited me to go horse vaulting on the following Monday too! http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/New%20Trampoline%201st%20of%20April/

That weekend as well, Sophie (the exchange student one), came to visit me and sleep over since her host parents were visiting Bregenz! I hanged around in the morning playing with the new trampoline while the neighrbour children terrorised me! Haha! I love having them so much! The weather was so nice as Spring was really coming and it was quite warm with beautiful sunshine!

I met up with Sophie and Emily later and we decided to go to Lindau, Germany to explore! http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/viv_whale/Weekend%20with%20Sophie%202nd%20and%203rd%20of%20April/We briefly went to the shopping centre there, but there wasn't that much. Regardless, it was a beautiful day and I think that made us happy enough. I still find it so cool how it only takes us around 20 minutes by train to go to another country! All of us later hanged out at my house and played in the backyard with all the neighbours. All the neighbours had dinner together at this 'Harry Potter' styled long wooden table with various grilled meat and sausages (they say grill instead of bbq). Emily left later because she needed to pack for her Wien week with her class while Sophie and I was satisfied with watching Bride and Prejudice! :D

The next day, one of my neighbours (I forgot her name!:( ) was really generous and nice and took Sophie and I to horse riding! We had turns in being led by her on the horse, since she wasn't sure about us just riding off because her friend owned those horses. I had fun hanging with her son, Juri who has so much energy in him that's it's crazy! He kept throwing dirt at me saying it was snow. Lol! Oh and one of the highlights that morning was seeing a foal which was born just a few hours before! The mother was a bit frantic and if we came too close she would come up and snort at us, meaning that if we went way too close she would be close enough to bite us. But just looking at the foal was simply beautiful!

Anyways, we bummed around afters and finished watching another one of my favourites, 'How to train a dragon!'. Love it! We didn't stay long before Dietmar, Maurice and I dropped her off to Feldkirch while we stayed there and had the BIGGEST schnitzel available in Voralberg in the castle there! It was literally 30cm! You can see it in the photos! But it's so thin. We had to share 2 between the three of us and even there, we were so insanely filled! We walked around later and then had icecream despite it was quite cool! And so began the week without Sabine, because she went on a holiday to Lyon, France with her class, similar to my class who went to Madrid or Lyon depending on which language they did.

So last week, I went to another class, one year younger than me to 6B. It was kind of boring since I didn't know that many people. And all the teachers basically told us to do whatever we wanted! Haha! But on Monday, I went vaulting with Pia! And that was simply amazing. I didn't take any photos unfortunately because I was too busy trying to stay alive! Haha! Vaulting is basically gymnastics on horses. And we did all these warm ups at first. In the beginning, it wasn't bad but then my body was really unfit (and still is). And I felt so bad because all of them were younger than me. And I felt even worse when they practised on the wooden thing which acted as a practise one. Omg, they were doing all these somersaults and cartwheels and difficult things! It was simply amazing! And they showed me some of their routines on the horses! Pia and her friends insisted I tried. Well amazingly I did some and survived. You have to imagine me doing them with much screamings and freaking outs! And then I did the simplest ones on the horses! And that was only when it was walking. I don't even want to think about doing it when its galloping. I think I would die of fright to be honest! Haha it was an amazing experience and want to do it again!!! But gosh, the next few days I was so sore from it! I'm not even joking. It hurt so much to laugh and cough because my muscles hurt!

Anyways that's my update for now! I'll update for sure asap before I go to Morocco on Saturday which I cannot wait for!

With love from Austria,

Vivian
